[ The majority, as he understands it, is owned by the hostess -- and his current employer -- though some pieces had also been loaned over for tonight's event. ]

[ Kasumi isn't typically one to readily divulge details on her old heists, especially ones that she considers close to her heart, but Quill's already been present for arguably one of the most personal of her heists yet, so she figures she has nothing to lose by talking about this particular instance. ]

One of the paintings on loan tonight is a piece by a dear friend of mine. Girl I saved from slavers a while back. The man who owns the painting, though, is a total scumbag--I'm just gossiping now, aren't I? Anyway, I think he might even be the ex-husband of the woman hosting this party?

[ He quirks an eyebrow, then, and though he doesn't quite smirk, there's a hint of amusement in his face. ]

Should've mentioned something sooner, Goto. Might be able to lend a hand, after all. Have something in mind?

[ She whistles, having caught on to the target, although she's not sure if he's been hired to kill the ex-husband or his new girlfriend (the drama between the hostess and her ex-husband is, apparently, not a big secret). ]

Lucky us. How about we help each other out, then? Need a distraction?

[ Peter's expression changes briefly from mild amusement to slightly incredulous-- ]

Do you really think I need a distraction?

[ --and quickly back to amusement when he continues. ]

Anyway. It would be unseemly to take care of my business in the middle of a function like this. Too many eyes, for one. Total party foul, for another.

Oh, but think of the drama that would unfold. This would be the party of the year, for sure.

[ she's joking. Kind of. ]

Afterward, sure. But until then, it'd mostly be a lot of noise and confusion and a whole lot of mess I just really don't want to deal with. And I sort of like the canapés they're serving, so I'd hate for things to end early.

[ She nods. ]

[ He glances around idly, ensuring no prying eyes and ears are listening in on their conversation. ]

When are you planning on making your move, anyway? Can't imagine you're planning on taking the painting in the middle of the party.

[ She leans back on the bench. ]

The pieces are going back into a vault after tonight before they get shipped back off to where they came from. So, you know. Then. I'm just here for the food.

[ Another idle glance around; a couple is meandering through the gardens, but they're too wrapped up in one another to pay Kasumi and Peter any mind. Extramarital affair, if Peter had to guess. ]

It's John Rogers, by the way. When we're among more civilized company.

[ Her gaze follows his, and her brows raise when she notices the couple. Kasumi's always loved a good societal scandal. ]

John Rogers, huh? I like it. Very American.

[ A beat. ] Audrey. Or Ms. Ishii. Whichever you'd prefer.

Kinda prefer Audrey II. [ Yes, that is a Little Shop of Horrors reference. ] But I can roll with Ms. Ishii.

Now, then. I have a person or two to stalk while I'm here. I imagine you've got some scouting of your own to do?

[ Kasumi's about to respond, but the rampant giggling of the woman they'd just spotted with her lover permeates through the hedges; apparently they've found a nice spot just on the other side. ]

You mean we weren't going to follow their lead?

[ That pulls a smirk from him. ]

You're incorrigible, Ms. Ishii. Think of the scandal.

I'm incorrigible? I think you have more than a few more rumors about your encounters, Rogers.

[ she says Rogers, but she really means Quill. Yep, she totally found a few angry "wow what a two-timing jerk" posts on the extranet when she got curious enough. ]

[ The amusement drains from his face. ]

Just a little bit. Nothing really came up except for a few pissed off asari.

I'll have to take your word for it.

[ Even still, he's not too much of a fan of Kasumi trying to dig up dirt on him, innocuous as it is. All the more reason to back off now, before she tries to hold something over his head like Hock did. If she tries to lord it over him, he really may have to deal with that loose end, sooner rather than later. ]

Anyway. I've still got work to do. Just wanted to thank you personally for keeping things quiet. Hopefully you continue seeing the benefit in both of us keeping to our agreement.

[ that's her cue to stand, moving over with a wicked grin, her deft fingers reaching for Peter's tie because apparently it needs straightening out. ]

You're quite welcome, Mr. Rogers. Don't worry, I'm quite done prying on my end. I would be a fool to turn my back on our agreement, seeing as I'd like to keep having a back.

[ He doesn't tense when she comes near -- Yondu taught him better control over his body language than that -- but his eyes narrow a little in suspicion. Still, his response comes easily enough. ]

Well, I'd like you to keep having a back, too. It's a pretty nice one.

[ Dang, Vanilla Peter would have been a goner at that little move. No matter, her grin widens at his response, and she leans in to whisper into his ear. ]

I'm glad you think so. Maybe someday we'll cross paths on a different kind of job, hmm?

[ He huffs out a quiet laugh, then steps back. Sure, the thought had crossed his mind, but Peter took great pains to keep his professional and personal life separated. Kasumi Goto, best thief in the galaxy, was thoroughly entrenched in his professional life. ]

Depends on the mood you catch me in, Ms. Ishii. Might be safer for the both of us if this were our last meeting, though.
